Definition

Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin. It can occur in patches or cover large areas of the body. There are many different causes of hyperpigmentation, including:

  • Sun exposure: This is the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.
  • Skin conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), can also cause darkening of the skin.
  • Hormonal changes: Hyperpigmentation can be triggered by hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during pregnancy or with certain medications.
  • Medications: Some medications can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect.

Treatment

Treatment for hyperpigmentation depends on the underlying cause and severity. Options may include topical creams with lightening agents, chemical peels, laser therapy, or microneedling. In some cases, no treatment is necessary.
