With the increasing demand for non-invasive facial rejuvenation methods to address wrinkles and age lines, dermal filler treatments have become more popular as time goes by.The science behind the process has advanced and developed to the point that multiple types of fillers and procedures exist to suit the differing requirements of patients.

Novique Medical Aesthetics offers a variety of dermal fillers depending on the area of the face requiring treatment, as well as the unique characteristics of each of our patients.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Mayo Clinic describes facial fillers for wrinkles as gel-like substances that are injected into or under the skin to make the surface appear smoother and make wrinkles less noticeable. Before dermal fillers are injected, a numbing anesthetic is locally applied. The substances comprising dermal fillers are biodegradable and bioabsorbable, which means that in time they will be absorbed into the body.

The most popular forms of dermal fillers that are FDA-approved include:

Hyaluronic acid
This is the most common substance used for dermal fillers and includes popular compositions such as Restylane, Juvederm, and others. This dermal filler uses a naturally occurring sugar in the body to deliver results that last 6 to 12 months.

Calcium hydroxylapatite
The filler that is used in the Radiesse brand for contouring jaw lines, restoring volume in the cheeks, and treating deeper wrinkles and skin folds. This substance is naturally found in the bone and can provide results that last up to a year when used for contouring, and when used to fill wrinkles, it can even last for three years.

Poly-L-lactic acid
Also known as PLLA, the material is used in Sculptra to restore facial volume lost due to aging or illness. It is a manufactured material that will be slowly absorbed by the body and can last up to two years.

Permanent soft tissue filler
Bellafill uses this type of filler to smooth deep wrinkles around the mouth. As the substance cannot be absorbed by the body, the results are permanent, removing the need for reinjecting fillers later on.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work to Remove Wrinkles and Age Lines?

Dermal fillers work by restoring lost volume, smoothing lines, softening creases, and enhancing facial contours. Other types of fillers also stimulate the production of new collagen, the natural tissues filling the space underneath the skin.

The first type are known as physical fillers that provide immediate volume and have a greater initial effect after injection but are typically absorbed gradually and lose their effect. The second type are bio-stimulatory fillers that, as the name suggests, stimulate collagen formation that create a space and structure for the entry of the body’s own cells to grow and create the appearance of fullness, making this type of filler injection more effective later on.

The benefits provided by dermal fillers of both types include:

  • Reducing the appearance of wrinkles, age lines, and fine lines
  • Restore smoother and youthful complexions to areas affected by aging
  • Increasing volume to thin lips resulting in a fuller and more youthful appearance
  • Adding volume to facial areas prone to losing fat or collagen due to aging such as the cheeks or temples
  • Improving the appearance of areas with scarring
  • Adjusting facial contour and shape to address asymmetries and improve patient’s self-image

Types of Dermal Fillers Available at Novique Medical Aesthetics

Belotero®
Belotero Balance (+) is an injectable filler utilizing hyaluronic acid. Designed to integrate into facial tissue, it has a unique manufacturing process that gives the substance a soft and cohesive gel composition. When injected, it instantly fills the skin and addresses moderate-to-severe etched-inlines and wrinkles in the lower facial areas. Belotero can also handle moderate nasolabial folds or small lines as well as lines around the mouth, and eyes. For delicate areas including etched-in vertical lip lines and under-eye hollows, Belotero may be an ideal treatment option.

Juvederm®
The number one dermal filler chosen in the United States with a reputation for delivering smooth and natural-looking, long-lasting results, Juvederm comes in six unique variants designed for ten specific areas of the face. Juvederm injectable gel fillers are FDA-approved and use hyaluronic acid as the primary ingredient. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is bioabsorbable.

When Juvederm formulations are injected into specific areas of the face that show signs of aging, the substance improves facial contour, helps the skin retain moisture and appear plump, smoothing wrinkles and adding volume. Novique offers Juvederm fillers such as:

  • Juvederm® Voluma
  • Juvederm® Vollure
  • Juvederm® Volbella
  • Juvederm® Ultra XC
  • Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC

Radiesse®
Radiesse dermal filler is wonderful for mild and moderate wrinkles and lines on the face, and for reversing volume loss in the hands. Patients who don’t have time for frequent touch-ups prefer the lasting results (over a year, in many cases) of Radiesse. With microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite in a flexible gel, Radiesse fills and smoothes the appearance of your face with a minimally invasive treatment.

Radiesse is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to effectively and safely volumize your face. It may be used with other injectable treatments (wrinkle fillers and relaxers) for a personalized procedure to rejuvenate your appearance.

Sculptra®
Sculptra® dermal fillers are made from lactic acid, a natural substance found in the body, making it biocompatible and biodegradable and lessening the chances of allergic reactions or complications. It restores natural collagen, the fibrous protein responsible for skin shape and structure and helps resist the signs of aging.

Over the years, people lose portions of their natural collagen, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Sculptra® stimulates the growth of natural collagen in those areas, reforming the networks supporting the inner structure of the skin. This lets Sculptra® soften smile lines, restore cheek volume, or refresh appearances, resulting in a subtle transformation that gives patients more youthful looks.

Restylane
Restylane® is the pioneering hyaluronic acid filler that has repeatedly proven to be a reliable, quick, and effective cosmetic treatment. It has numerous applications ranging from under-eye hollows and nasolabial folds to lips, chin, marionette lines, cheeks, and even the backs of the hands. There are many formulations of Restylane® for specific applications. The family of dermal fillers includes:

  • Restylane Silk
  • Restylane Lyft
  • Restylane Line
  • Restylane Refyne
  • Restylane Defyne

How Long Do Dermal Filler Results Last?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains that noninvasive facial rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers provide results that have differing longevity depending on the injection sites. For deeper injections the fillers may last as long as 12 months with newer products designed for additional longevity allowing them to last up to two years.

For dermal injections closer to the skin such as those addressing lines and wrinkles, thinner products may be utilized to fill in the contour and smooth the skin. Due to this the substances may be metabolized over a shorter period of time, lasting 6-12 months. Areas of the face with more movement including the face and lips might cause the substance to dissipate even quicker due to the constant motion of the muscles.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Dermal fillers are generally safe when administered by qualified professionals. The FDA approves their use for patients aged 22 and older to correct facial wrinkles, folds, and certain types of scars. However, fillers are not approved for use in large body areas such as the breasts or buttocks due to safety concerns.

Contraindications include allergies to ingredients, active infections, or bleeding disorders. When seeking dermal filler treatment, choose a licensed health care provider with experience in injecting dermal fillers, knowledge in the treatment and its effects, and how to manage potential complications.
